Why does consuming coconut oil sometimes cause diarrhoea?
Coconut oil is composed almost entirely of saturated fats, particularly Medium-Chain Triglycerides (MCTs). If you consume large amounts of coconut oil suddenly (such as multiple tablespoons in hot beverages), your small intestine may not be able to absorb the high volume of fat quickly enough. The unabsorbed fatty acids travel down into the colon, where they draw water into the bowel through an osmotic laxative effect, resulting in rapid-onset cramping and loose stools.
