Methaemoglobin levels rise as a result of exposure to certain medications or foods, and more rarely because of a congenital condition (from birth). Babies are particularly susceptible to the acquired form – and exposure to benzocaine or foods containing high levels of nitrates can be particularly problematic. Adults may develop this condition after receiving topical anaesthetics and anti-malarial drugs, for example. 1 x EDTA
