Pernicious Anaemia Antibodies + Autoimmune Antibody Profile
Our Pernicious Anaemia Antibodies + Autoimmune Antibody Profile is a private blood test that measures five different antibody markers associated with autoimmune activity involving the stomach, liver and other tissues.
This expanded profile combines Intrinsic Factor Antibodies with Gastric Parietal Cell, Smooth Muscle, Mitochondrial and Liver Kidney Microsomal Antibodies.
The test includes antibodies associated with autoimmune gastritis and pernicious anaemia, alongside additional autoimmune antibody markers that may be associated with certain liver conditions.
What Does This Blood Test Include?
Intrinsic Factor Antibodies (IFAB)
Intrinsic factor is a protein produced in the stomach that is essential for the absorption of vitamin B12. Antibodies against intrinsic factor may interfere with this process and are associated with pernicious anaemia.
Gastric Parietal Cell Antibodies (GASP)
These antibodies target parietal cells in the lining of the stomach. They may be associated with autoimmune gastritis and pernicious anaemia, although they can also be detected in individuals without these conditions.
Smooth Muscle Antibodies (ASMO)
These antibodies react with components of smooth muscle tissue. They may be found in association with certain autoimmune liver conditions, including autoimmune hepatitis, but are not specific to one condition.
Mitochondrial Antibodies (AMIT)
These antibodies target components within mitochondria. Certain antimitochondrial antibodies are associated with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), an autoimmune condition affecting the liver's bile ducts.
Liver Kidney Microsomal Antibodies (LKM)
These antibodies target specific proteins found in liver and kidney cells. Certain LKM antibodies may be associated with autoimmune hepatitis, including type 2 autoimmune hepatitis.
Understanding Your Results
Your blood sample will be analysed by a specialist laboratory, with results provided in a laboratory report.
The presence or absence of these antibodies does not, on its own, confirm or exclude pernicious anaemia or another autoimmune condition.
Results should be interpreted by an appropriately qualified healthcare professional alongside medical history, symptoms and any other relevant investigations.
