This test available from a whole blood sample is often recommended as part of a general investigation into fertility. The level is positively associated with 'ovarian reserve', that is (potentially) how many eggs are available still, and therefore the likelihood of becoming pregnant. The level declines naturally with age. Particularly high levels are associated with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) however, which is associated with difficulty in conceiving.
