This vacutainer blood test is often requested when Vitamin B12 is thought or known to be low. The cause of the low level may be down to the presence of autoantibodies – antibodies made by the individual’s own immune system which attack its own cells. Gastric Parietal Cell antibodies target specialised cells that line the stomach. These cells make hydrochloric acid and Intrinsic Factor, and if their function is impaired there is likely to be a failure of absorption of (in particular) Vitamin B12 - and ultimately Pernicious Anaemia will develop if there is no B12 supplementation. Often requested with a test Intrinsic Factor Antibodies.
