This whole blood test is for 4 essential trace elements needed in very small quantities by the body (hence the description of 'trace'). Despite the tiny amounts required, they are often inadequately ingested and deficiencies are common.
Copper - deficiency is rare but more common after gastric surgery and in coeliac disease. Supplementing with zinc can lead to copper deficiency. Excess is recognised, and Wilson's disease is the name given to the most common cause
Zinc - 9% of British children do not ingest sufficient Zinc for long term good health - a higher number than other European nations. 10% of younger women are reported to take insufficient zinc for optimal long term health.
Selenium - intake in the UK has declined since the 1970s, and several government led surveys have demonstrated low selenium intake across a wide age range of the UK population.
Magnesium - deficiency is increasingly recognised amongst certain groups of people - for example uncontrolled diabetics, those with bowel disorders and some taking long term medication such as omeprazole.
