When should I speak to my GP about digestive symptoms?

You should consult your GP if you experience any persistent change in your bowel habits lasting longer than a few weeks, unexplained abdominal discomfort, or regular bloating that fails to settle. You must seek prompt medical attention if you experience "red flag" symptoms, including visible blood in your stool, dark or black stools, unexplained weight loss, difficulty swallowing, persistent vomiting, a palpable lump in your abdomen, or waking up during the night with diarrhoea.
