PLAC test

Quick Overview

The PLAC Test measures Lp-PLA2 activity quantitatively. This assists with the prediction of risk caused by the thickening, or hardening, of the arteries caused by the build-up of plaque.

This Private PLAC (Pla2) Blood Test is available as a finger prick home test kit but can also be purchased as a professional vacutainer kit for our nurse visit or hospital attendance services. You may also self arrange a blood draw with a local service you are familiar with.

At Blue Horizon Blood Tests we hope always to be aspirational in our messages to you, focusing on positive prevention of illness through lifestyle choice as guided by appropriate blood testing – in contrast to the negative ‘Medical Check’ culture which may prey on people’s fears in order simply to sell more blood tests. Today however, we make no apologies for spreading a few cautionary words about heart attack and stroke risk because there is a simple test now available which could flag up problems long before they are revealed in the most dramatic way. We hope that you will read on and then agree that on this occasion we are justified in taking this approach.

Please consider the following two statements.

  1. Coronary Heart Disease is the largest cause of death in the UK - however, over half of all heart attacks occur in individuals with unremarkable Cholesterol levels. (1)
  2. Stroke is the second largest cause of death in the UK – however, Total Cholesterol levels are NOT reliable predictors of strokes. (2)

 What does this mean?
It means that standard lipid panels (which traditionally include measurements of levels of Total Cholesterol, HDL, LDL and Triglcerides) may be ineffective in predicting who will suffer from heart and blood vessel (cardiovascular) disease.
The GOOD NEWS is that there is a more relevant test already available - one which can lead to simple and direct intervention to drastically reduce risk of heart attack and stroke.
In 2015 we started offering a new test called a PLAC test. It measures levels of “Lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2)”, an enzyme which is a marker of inflammation and effectively a measure of the progression of rupture-prone arterial plaques. These plaques are the precursors of damage to important blood vessels, and rupture of one or more of them may lead to blockage of arteries, withheart attack or stroke the undesirable outcome. The higher the score the more precarious the state of play in the blood vessels, and therefore greater the risk of stroke or heart attack.

Key facts:

  • The process which leads to plaque rupture starts early, with inflammation playing a critical role.
  • However, this damage once identified is potentially reversible – and the sooner discovered the better the prospects of risk reduction.
  • Elevated Lp-PLA2 is therefore an early signal which can help identify patients at risk for plaque rupture.

Any test promoted for early detection of disease should always be accompanied by the possibility of effective intervention – with this test, knowing the level will enable you to address relevant lifestyle changes and consider appropriate medication before damage is done.
This is not a test that can easily be ordered through the NHS. However, so convinced are we at Blue Horizon of its relevance that we offer it all of our staff.

It is available through Blue Horizon Blood Tests through either a traditional blood draw kit, or with a finger-prick kit.

    1. Q: Do I need a Doctor’s Referral to use this service?

A: No you do not require a Doctor’s Referral, we provide one when you have placed an order. This is free of charge, and a consultation is not required unless stated on certain tests.

    1. Q: So all I need to do is order online or over the phone, and then prepare for my blood draw.. Seriously, is that it?

A: Yes, the process is that simple.

    1. Q: How soon will I get my results?

A: The turnaround times are clearly stated in working days on all of our blood test pages, this is the timeframe that we estimate for turnaround of results.

    1. Q: Do I get a copy of my results?

A: You will receive a PDF copy of your laboratory certificate which prints onto A4 paper. If you would like a paper copy, let us know and we will post one out to you.

    1. Q: Pathology points

A: Pathology points are points we provide when purchasing a test to add more value to your order. Each test will show how many Pathology Points you will earn if purchased. Each Pathology Point is worth £1.00 and can only be redeemed against future blood test orders.

    1. Q: What is the difference between reported and unreported results?

A: Reported results will be sent to the GP for comment, this process can take up to two working days to complete in addition to the stated turnaround time for results. If you select unreported results, then you choose not to have the interpretation of our GP and they will be sent directly to you. This is advisable if you already have a specialist to share the results with or are able to interpret them yourself. In the event of any results being of a critical nature we will always be in contact to make you aware of this.

Finger-Prick Try Again Guarantee
If you are not successful in obtaining a viable finger prick sample (1 in 10 are unsuccessful) we find that in situations where finger-prick instructions have been followed correctly and success has not been met, then a second attempt will most likely meet with the same fate. But the choice is yours – so if you want to take this risk we can send out another finger-prick kit free of charge for you, but if you fail again and request a refund we will need to deduct an administration charge of £5.
Alternatively of course we can look at phlebotomy options for you such as a nurse visit, attendance at a BMI hospital or you can arrange your own vacutainer sample collection and we won’t charge you for the failed finger-prick kit.

One year usage Guarantee
You have up to one year from when you have purchased the kit to return it to the Laboratory in the supplied envelope. After a year has expired if you still would like your test please contact us and we’ll see what we can do for you. We may just need to check expiry dates of batch components.

Refund requests must be made by email to assistance@bluehorizonmedicals within the timeframes stated above together with a reason for the request. Unused kits should be sent to Blue Horizon Medicals, Tavyside Health Centre, Abbey Rise, Tavistock PL19 9FD. Please do not use the supplied envelopes as these go to the laboratory and may incur further charges. We guarantee that any refunds or pathology points due to be credited will be done so within seven working days of our receipt of the kit.
